    Areas of practice

    Focus

As Registered Clinical Counsellors, our practice is focused on helping individuals, couples, and families who feel trapped and powerless, and desire to move forward on their healing journey with a positive mindset. With empathy and care, we work with adults and youth with mental health concerns stemming from childhood trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, and relational trauma, and women who are victims of gender-based violence and sexual assault.

To support individuals as they navigate through life's complexities, we offer counselling for concerns related to self-esteem, stress management, procrastination, perfectionism, burnout, anger management, and vicarious trauma. We also provide counselling for mental health concerns that include addictions, ADHD, emotional dysregulation (BPD), grief and loss, bicultural identity crises, family problems, acculturative stress, and life transitions.

With training in the Gottman Method and EFT,  we work with couples who are facing communication and interpersonal challenges in their relationship. We offer court-ordered therapy for anger management and respectful relationships. We also work with families experiencing inter-generational conflict due to acculturation and intercultural tension from changes in family structure and dynamics.

    Therapeutic Modalities

Our approaches are integrative and holistic with a culturally responsive, developmentally sensitive lens influenced by an understanding of the impact of trauma on the brain. This approach allows us to gain insight into a client’s unique developmental experiences and trauma responses. Some of the modalities our counsellors work with include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Committment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Family Systems, Mindfulness, Gottman Method, and Solution-Focused Therapy. We also offer speciflized trauma treatment using EMDR.

For couples therapy, we use the Gottman Method to increase closeness and intimacy between a couple while aiming to address conflict productively so that both partners can embrace positivity and shared meaning together. Couples who have effective tools to disarm conflict, offer understanding and compassion to one another, and build awareness of communication barriers that can be detrimental to a healthy relationship have shown to maintain stronger bonds and overcome relational discourse through the course of their relationship.

We offer family counselling to support families in adjusting to unexpected, traumatic, or transitional events and changes.  We believe that a family is a unique social system with its own structure, dynamics, and communication patterns derived from parental values, transgenerational effects, and cultural expectations. We work with families to navigate conflict, overcome strained relational dynamics, and achieve balance in their home.

    Collaboration, Culture, and Language Support

We strongly emphasize collaboration with our clients as we try to understand their narratives and explore their experiences through guided discovery. We help our clients to explore deeper emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and experiences that may be difficult to delve into on their own. We support them in unravelling their story so that they can openly talk about their concerns and gain clarity on how their situation has impacted them to bring about change when they are ready.

We are committed to tailoring therapy to the client’s needs by assessing and addressing their concerns effectively with evidence-based treatments. Our therapists offer therapy in English, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi. Due to their unique cultural identity and rich cultural experiences, we work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and intersectionalities. As an advocate for diversity and inclusion, our approach emphasizes a culturally responsive and anti-oppressive outlook with an aim to decolonize mental health. Our clients also work across various industries which include healthcare, law enforcement, education, technology, and trades.

With validation, compassion, and trust in the therapeutic relationship, we can help individuals heal from past trauma and support them in navigating through emotional complexities and life transitions, enhancing their quality of life and well-being.

Working on developing self-compassion will allow you to move more easily through difficult times in the future, as wells as attain a sense of inner peace and empowerment to advocate for your well being.

    Anxiety Counselling

The anxiety counselling services we offer are designed to help you overcome fear, stress, and anxiety. Clients are provided a supportive and non-judgmental environment where they can explore their thoughts and feelings, gain insights into their behaviour, and develop strategies to manage their anxiety. Anxiety can be debilitating and disruptive leaving an individual feeling confused, vulnerable, and frustrated. Although experiencing a certain level anxiety is natural and an adaptive response in our nervous system to keep us safe, it becomes maladaptive when in overdrive. Understanding the neurobiology behind anxiety and the events that trigger it is critical to treatment. Therapy includes a deep exploration of how anxiety developed, how it is keeping you safe, and coping strategies that may be useful to manage high levels of anxiety. Psychoeducation on the neurobiology behind the stress response provides a deep understanding of how stress impacts the nervous system. In our sessions, I will support you in exploring your thoughts, emotions such as fear, sadness, and anger as well as triggers that lead to heightened levels of anxiety. Exploring earlier experiences and trauma that may have led to the development of negative beliefs and may be fueling negative automatic thoughts can help determine the root cause of anxiety to break dysfunctional thinking patterns. When dealing with anxiety, improving one’s self-concept and self efficacy can be an empowering and liberating process

    Depression Counselling

The depression counselling services we provide are rooted mainly in CBT, ACT, and an understanding of polyvagal theory. With CBT, therapy can help you overcome feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. We provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, gain insights into your behaviour, and develop strategies to manage your depression. Therapy focuses on identifying and breaking cognitive patterns that fuel negative thinking with an integrative and holistic approach to target emotional, psychological, physiological, social, behavioural, and motivational factors that contribute to depressive symptoms. Behavioural activation, reframing negative thinking, and engaging in healthy living are integral to treatment. Using polyvagael theory, depression is perceived as a biological defense strategy or survival-based shutdown response due to the autonomic nervous system being in overdrive. Symptoms are characterized as immobilization, withdrawal, and a sense of hopelessness and impeding doom. Somatic experiencing and mindfulness-based interventions may be introduced to help the nervous system achieve a homeostatic state by providing cues of safety and stability. ACT therapy has also shown effectivness in reducing depressive symptoms by fostering psychological flexibility through acceptance of negative thoughts and feelings as transient mental events and committing to making choices that aligns with one's values and prioritizes personal goals that bring a sense of meaning and purpose. Overall, counselling sessoins focus on treating depression by aiming to acknowledge negative thoughts, implement lifestyle changes, tap into motivation to to set and achieve goals, and build a sense of accomplishment and a positive mindset through consistency and effort.

    Trauma Counselling

Trauma counselling can help you overcome the effects of traumatic events. We use evidence-based techniques to help you heal from the psychological impact of trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, and dissociation. We provide a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your experiences and develop strategies to move forward. Therapy utilizes a 3-phase approach to establish safety and security inside and outside therapy, processing of trauma through exploration and deconstruction, and post-traumatic growth and reconnection. A trauma-focused approach integrates guided exploration, coping strategies, narrative interventions, CBT, and somatic experiencing to explore trauma, generate corrective emotional experiences, build a positive sense of self, improve self-efficacy and instill a sense of empowerment with rebuilding of trust. y. A neurobiological lens is used to understand the impact of trauma on the brain.  Treatment can be combined with EMDR to process disturbing memories and negative core beliefs related to traumatic incidences.

    Stress Management/Burnout

For stress management and burnout, we can help you explore and understand how you can manage stress.  We provide an empathetic and collaborative space for you to talk about your challenges so you can cope with stress in healthy ways and overcome burnout. Therapeutic modailities are based in CBT, mindfulness, and EFT By managing your stress and how you respond under pressure, we can support you in achieving your personal and professional goals with guidance, support, and motivation.  We can help you identify your strengths, overcome obstacles, and improve your work performance and functional well-being. Stress management techniques and conflict resolution skills are delivered to help cope with stress and minimize long term impacts of stress on wellbeing. Strategies to mitigate burnout are also discussed.  Emphasis is placed on self-care and self-compassion as important to tools to manage stress and draw boundaries to maintain a healthy balance between various domains of every day life.

    Grief Counselling

Our grief counselling services can help you cope with the loss of a loved one. We provide a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your feelings of grief, gain insights into your behaviour, and develop strategies to manage your grief and move forward. Therapy focuses on identifying the form of grief or loss and helping the process of coming to terms with the loss with emotional support and compassion.  My perception is that grief is a complex emotion and difficult for clients to navigate. Grief can be understood as love with nowhere to go and all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. An important aspect of grief is creating a vision for the future that is meaningful and honours the loss. Helping individuals better connect with their loss and move through related emotions such as regret, guilt, denial, anger, and sadness can help move towards acceptance of the loss.

    Anger Management

For anger management,  therapy is focused on a CBT approach to explore your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and experiences to understand the complexity behind emotional dysregulation, nervous system acitivation, and conditioning. Our counsellors work with you to develop strategies to  control your anger in healthy ways and help you rewire. By understanding your triggers and building awareness around how you can think, feel, and behave differently, we can help you mange your emotions and feel more regulated. We provide support to help you identify the root causes of your anger, develop coping skills, and improve your relationships with others. Treatment focus is on exploration of anger and where it is rooted as well as deep emotions that are masked by anger such as sadness, frustration, grief, resentment, guilt, and shame. Discussions to explore unresolved and suppressed anger from earlier experiences can be valuable for addressing the impact of trauma and moving forward with a sense of calm and internal balance.  Anger can often be a part of the grief process and acts as a bodyguard for pain. When one's boundaries are encroached on, anger is a natural response for self-protection. Treatment provides coping strategies to manage emotional dysregulation through mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion-focused strategies.  Learning how to manage anger can help regulate the nervous system as deep breathing, somatic release, mindful awareness, and re-regulation of your brain are important interventions discussed in therapy.

    Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing-EMDR

We offer EMDR as a treatment approach to treat various mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and intrusive memories. EMDR has been effective to reduce trauma symptoms by altering the storage of memories in your brain. Dual attention stimulation achieved by bilateral eye movements or tapping can help process traumatic memories and target negative thoughts and beliefs related to negative experiences so they are no longer distressful.

    Couples and Relationship Counselling

Our counsellors use the Gottman Method to work with couples to increase closeness and intimacy between a them while aiming to address conflict productively so that both partners can embrace positivity, a sense of trust, and shared meaning together. Using the principles of the Sound Relationship House Theory, therapy is focused on a disarming conflict using the four horsemen, cultivating fondness and trust in each other through maximizing emotional connection, and fostering a sense of empathy and understanding to encourage partners to understand each other's perspectives and find common ground. Sessions focus on improving communication, building intimacty, and managing conflict  through validation, understanding, and building positive interactions.

Empowering You to ENGAGE IN self-discovery AND GROWth

    Journey of Self-Discovery

Counselling can support you to embark on a journey of self-discovery where you can unpack your experiences and explore your thoughts and feelings without judgement. We derive a sense of meaning and fulfillment in engaging in conversations that explore the significance of past experiences and their impact on one’s growth and life trajectory. This is a sphere that holds valuable potential for remediating your understanding of yourself and your purpose in life. The journey of self-discovery focuses on understanding your own identity and standing in your own truth.  Our  understanding is that we prefer to see situations as black or white but much of life happens in the gray.  Navigating the gray can be tough, leaving you feeling trapped and alone. This is a challenging process that requires you to navigate through your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, morals, values, and difficult experiences. Working on self-discovery challenges you to allow deeper emotions and experiences that may be repressed to come to the surface so they can be acknowledged and brought into your awareness with self-compassion and self-acceptance. Sometimes trauma experiences can leave imprints that stunt your growth and ability to connect with yourself. As you work towards removing all barriers that question your authenticity, you may uncover your own truth by reconnecting with yourself and revitalizing your potential. The process of healing and self-discovery may be deeply associated with uncovering your sense of purpose or simply with developing the ability to exist in harmony with the elements.

    Self-Esteem

Our sessions are focused on building a sense of self, targeting self-worth, and boosting your confidence. Building self-efficacy is a building block to developing a positive mindset which supports the generation of a positive self-concept and the capacity to access inner wisdom. Therapy uses a CBT framework and CBT-based interventions to build a sense of empowerment, positivity, and self-efficacy. Reframing negative beliefs and exploring attachment wounds are an integral component of treatment.  Exploring one's perception of their attributes and qualities that define them while recognizing strengths and weaknesses through self-reflection and awareness are core aspects of developing a positive sense of self. Repairing self-esteem may also require healing past trauma and changing deeply-rooted beliefs about one's self and feeling empowered to be independent and build positive relationships. Shadow work can also bring deeper insight into allowing the repressed parts of yourself due to shame, trauma, or fear of judgement come forward and be integrated into your conscious with awareness. The process may require unraveling deeper emtions and experiences such as anger, jealousy, guilt, resentment, and past failures. By bringing some of these undesirable and uncomfortable parts to light,  we can explore their purpose and reframe them so you can accept parts of your personality with compassion and understanding. This can open new perspectives that can be explored resulting in increased inner strength, self-compassion, and authenticity, ultimately boosting your self-worth.

    Counselling for BIPOC Communities

As a second-generation Canadian, we are passionate about working with immigrants, refugees, and members of the BIPOC community. We recognize and respect their unique challenges in Canada and along life’s journey.  Deeply intrigued by each individual’s intersectionality that informs their unique cultural identity and spirituality, we support individuals in sharing their struggles related to discrimination and oppression experienced due to any part of their identity and circumstances that don't fit with the majority. Often times depression, anxiety, PTSD, emotional dysregulation, grief, and addiction can be a consequence of feeling oppressed and facing discrimination.

    Youth Counselling

Youth counselling services are designed to help young people overcome a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, and more. We use evidence-based techniques to help teens develop coping skills, improve self-esteem, and achieve greater success in school and other areas of life including peer interactions and family dynamics.

    Addiction Counselling

Our addiction counselling services can help you overcome substance abuse and other addictive behaviors. We use a variety of evidence-based techniques to help you develop coping skills, build a support network, and achieve lasting recovery. We also provide support for family members affected by addiction. Addiction such as substance use and alcohol addiction can leave an individual feeling alone and powerless falling into the addictive behaviour patterns more and more. This can lead to the deterioration of an individual’s health and well being by disrupting relationships, daily living routines, and financial stability while compromising quality of life. Therapy for addiction helps the individual understand the motives behind their behaviour and develop a treatment plan. We can help to break these dysfunctional behavior patterns by providing a safe space and emotional support to explore the addiction. Often individuals who have substance use issues may have comorbid depression or anxiety and may find it difficult to cope with stress, grief, relational discourse, and life transitions. We can support you in breaking dysfunctional patterns in dealing with overwhelming emotions and learn healthy coping strategies to build self-efficacy, improve distress tolerance, and change negative thinking to create a positive belief system.

    BPD/Emotional Regulation/DBT Skills Training

Counselling for individuals who have borderline personality disorder (BPD) symtpoms or difficulty regulating emotions includes interventions from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) in the form of DBT skills training which includes developing coping skills in the domains of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Individuals with BPD struggle with emotional dysregulation, impuslvity and relational distress. Treatment includes unpacking earlier experiences that may have left individuals feeling invalidated and unheard. Learning coping strategies along with psychoeducational and having a safe space to address distressful experiences can help individuals take control of managing their thoughts, emotions, and relationships.

    Women's Issues

Women face issues that impact their mental health ranging from general concerns to issues specific to their intersectionality with cultural considerations, trauma experiences, and biologically-based concerns. Therapy focuses on addressing intimacy issues, trauma, complex family relationships, prenatal and postpartum concerns, and life transitions. A culturally responsive and socially just lens is used to help women navigate through unique life experiences and cultural expectations. As women navigate through interpersonal violence, gender biases, objectification, multiple roles, and systemic oppression, counselling provides a space to safely unpack their experiences and gain clarity from a nonjudgmental and anti-oppressive lens that promotes a sense of empowerment. Often reinforcing a strong sense of self and gaining clarity on decision-making can be made easier with emotional support and a space to deconstruct their narratives while respecting their worldview.
